Rising Tennis Star Leylah Fernandez Scores Victory Against Former World’s Number 1 at the US Open.

On Sunday, Canadian teen Leylah Annie Fernandez scored a win over former world No. 1 Angelique Kerber at the US Open. This victory advances the young tennis star to the tournament’s upcoming quarter-final on September 7.

While the match proved to be close, Germany’s Kerber could not top Fernandez’s strategy on the court, with the 18-year old dominating the third set. Again, the score was 4-6, 6-7, 6-2 in the round of 16.

Last Friday night, the young Canadian tennis star got the better of Japanese Naomi Osaka in the tournament’s third round. Fernandez is presently ranked 73rd in the WTA standings.

Additionally, the young Canadian tennis star won over Kerber just a day shy of her 19th birthday. And with her performance and energy on the court, it is safe to say that Fernandez is just getting started.

Fernandez thanks her supporters for her recent wins. “The crowd, they were amazing, they fought for me, and they cheered for me,” she shared. During the post-match interview, the Canadian tennis player described Kerber as “a champion and a fighter.”

On Tuesday, Fernandez is set to go head to head with US Open’s No. 5 seed, Elina Svitolina, of Ukraine. When asked what her strategy will be on her upcoming match, Fernandez related that she’s “just going to go on the court and have fun like I’ve been doing the past few days.”
